Z, Y, X, … uh… Q … no wait… J! … uh… uh…

Can you recite the alphabet backward? If you can, then you are in the minority according to the Wii Bureau of Statistics.

According to the results of the question on the Wii Everybody Votes Channel, only 32.1% of Canadian Wii users said they could, while 67.9% said they couldn’t, which surprised me because I don’t think it’s that difficult.

Question: Can you recite the alphabet backward?

  Yes No
Nationally 32.1% 67.9%
Male 32.8% 67.2%
Female 30.5% 69.5%

National prediction accuracy: 71.5%

Mind versus Body

July 26, 2008 @ 10:27 By: gordon Category: Statistics, Wii

The results of a question asked on the Wii Everybody Votes Channel recently suggest that we Canadian Wii players are an intellectual bunch.

Question: Which is more important to exercise daily…

  …your mind? …your body?
Canada 52.5% 47.5%
Males 51.0% 49.0%
Females 55.5% 44.5%

National prediction accuracy: 41.7%

Guys more likely to swallow than girls…

June 19, 2008 @ 22:55 By: gordon Category: Statistics, Wii

… chewing gum.  (What did you think I meant?)

According to the Everybody Votes Channel on the Nintendo Wii, guys are more likely to swallow their chewing gum when they’re finished than girls are, but overall both groups are much more likely to spit it out when they’re finished.

Question: After you’re finished chewing gum, do you…

  Spit it out Swallow it
Canada 85.5% 14.5%
Males 84.6% 15.4%
Females 87.7% 12.3%

National predication accuracy: 89.6%

Canadians have a Wii bit o’ national pride

April 07, 2008 @ 23:08 By: gordon Category: Statistics, Wii

This just in from the Everybody Votes Channel available on the Nintendo Wii.

Question: Do you want to live in a foreign country?

  Yes No
Global 40.7% 59.3%
Male 40.8% 59.2%
Female 40.5% 59.5%
Canada ~30% ~70%

Worldwide Prediction Accuracy: 51.7%

According to the results, about two-thirds of Venezeulan Wii players want to live in a foreign country.  Most Japanese Wii players, on the other hand, are quite happy where they are with only a quarter wanting to live in a foreign country.

Canada ranked second from the bottom, just behind Japan, with about 30:70 in favour of not wanting to live somewhere else.  The United States was about 40:60.

Of course, the Everybody Votes Channel is not scientific, but it’s still interesting.

Haircuts à la Wii

March 30, 2008 @ 10:02 By: gordon Category: Statistics, Wii

More from the Everybody Votes Channel available on the Nintendo Wii.

Question: How often do you get your hair cut?

Every 2 months or less Longer than 2 months
Nationally 37.8% 62.2%
Male 43.6% 56.4%
Female 23.8% 76.2%

National Prediction Accuracy: 47.4% (Interesting… most people guessed wrong.)

Almost twice as many guys as girls go to the barber more frequently than every two months. The last time I visited my barber, we were talking about how much the average visit to the barber costs guys versus how much the average visit to the beauty salon costs women next door. I was shocked to discover that I spend in a year what many women spend in one visit to the stylist at a salon. And I spend significantly less time per visit, too.

Cell phones according to Wii

January 11, 2008 @ 08:47 By: gordon Category: Statistics, Wii

More from the Everybody Votes Channel available on the Nintendo Wii.

Question: Do you have a cell/mobile phone?

  Yes No
Global 77.7% 22.3%
Male 77.1% 22.9%
Female 78.7% 21.3%
Canada ~66.6% ~33.4%

Worldwide Prediction Accuracy: 91.1% (i.e. most people’s crystal balls were working when they made their predictions.)

I eyeballed the numbers for Canada from a bar graph showing yes/no votes, but we were definitely far behind Finland, which the graph showed as having almost 100% of the people indicating they had a cell phone.  Not really surprising given the fact that Nokia, a leader among mobile phone manufacturers, is based in Finland.

Of course, the Everybody Votes Channel is not scientific, but it’s still interesting.

Intelligence vs. Appearance

January 01, 2008 @ 12:57 By: gordon Category: Statistics, Wii

In a previous entry, I talked about the Everybody Votes Channel on the Nintendo Wii. I checked mine recently and noticed that more results had been posted. One that caught my eye was this one:

Question: Would you rather be…

20 IQ points smarter 20 lbs. lighter
Canada 68.7% 31.3%
Male 73.2% 26.8%
Female 57.4% 42.6%

National Prediction Accuracy: 54.2% (how many people guessed which would be more popular)

It’s interesting that of those who responded to the question, almost 50% more females than males said they want to be 20 pounds lighter than 20 IQ points smarter. Is appearance really that much more important than intelligence?
