The Ray: A review

December 16, 2011 @ 01:41 By: gordon Category: Comic books

Imagine you’re a lifeguard on-duty at your beach in California, flirting with the beach bunnies and generally enjoying the sun, sand and surf. All of the sudden your zapped by some bizarre energy beam from an experiment gone wrong in the middle of the desert over 200 miles away from you. However, instead of being fried to a crisp you’re imbued with freaky superpowers that allow you to move like a beam of light, with only the small problem that because you’re now effectively a walking quartz halogen lamp that your clothes burst into flames when you put them on. (Fortunately, one of your powers is the ability to control how you reflect light so you can make it look like you’re wearing clothes even if you aren’t.)

That’s how the inaugural issue of The Ray from DC Comics starts out.

I’ve seen some amazing fireworks shows, particularly at Les Grands Feux du Casino du Lac-Leamy, but I’ve never seen anything like this daytime explosives and smoke show in this YouTube video:

Comic books update

December 08, 2011 @ 15:48 By: gordon Category: Comic books

It’s been a few weeks since being lured into the world of comic books by Joseph Mallozzi in late October, so I thought I’d let you know how the new addiction hobby is going. I’ve been following a number of series in the DC New 52 family that have caught my interest. Most of them I’ve decided are worth following for the long run, while one or two are still on probation. Geocaching in 2011: Perception vs. Reality

December 05, 2011 @ 12:38 By: gordon Category: Geocaching, Statistics

Though I’ve been geocaching for a long time, my number of finds is quite a bit less than some geocachers I know who haven’t been caching nearly as long as I have, but who have several thousand finds. But, for me, it’s not about the numbers.

I was thinking about how much caching I’d done this year compared to last year and that I hadn’t done that much caching this year. But, when I looked at the stats, I found a completely different story.

First, the graph (red line=caches found in the year; blue line=cumulative caches found):

All-American Muslim

November 29, 2011 @ 16:57 By: gordon Category: General

I’ve been fighting a cold the black plague the flu for most of the last week, so I’ve watched a lot of television. So much television that I’ve come to the conclusion that even though I have a fairly über cable package the actual amount of unique content on tv in a given day is lower than you’d think. A lot of channels seem to have six-hour bundles that they run three or four times a day, which with the repetition because of the “time shift” channels means you only have to wait a couple of hours if you miss it first time round. Add in the big networks that are rebroadcast by local channels when they don’t have original content and you can find the same show on many channels at the same time.

But this post really isn’t about the 57-channels-and-nothing’-on problem. It’s about a new reality show I’ve seen advertised. The show is called “All-American Muslim”.
