Comic books update (part 2)

December 13, 2011 @ 08:09 By: gordon Category: Comic books

Continuing on from my last post on the topic in which I talked about Green Arrow and the three Green Lanterns (Green Lantern, Green Lantern: New Guardians and Green Lantern, here are some of the other comics that I’m following and a couple that I’m looking forward to when they’re released.

RedLanterns_1Red Lanterns

The Red Lanterns wield power rings that use the red light of range. They also have incredibly flammable and corrosive blood that they can basically spit at the target of their rage. Lead by Atrocitus, they are animalistic, driven by their primal instinct of rage. He has chosen a Red Lantern named Bleez to be his #2 and restored her intelligence. We also encounter Bleez in Green Lantern: New Guardians.

I wasn’t sure about this one at first, but I think it’s got a lot of potential, so it’s on the pull list.

DoctorWho_11Doctor Who

I was browsing through the graphic novels in Chapters one day and the Doctor Who Omnibus #2 caught my eye. And then when I was wandering through Silver Snail looking at the new releases, the second issue in a new story arc caught my eye, so I grabbed it and the first issue in the arc. Comparable to the television series in terms of the dialogue and story lines, this form of Doctor Who will likely appeal to fans of the television series.

It’s on the pull list, too.

IncredibleIronMan_509Invincible Iron Man

Iron Man is one of the comics that has gotten a bit of a boost in the last few years thanks to a couple of movies. I didn’t have the luxury of getting in at issue #1 like I did with the DC comics and the New 52 reboot, but that’s not been a problem so far. I like the idea of Iron Man (i.e. no “magic” powers, just a guy and a costume. Ok, fine… a guy and a high tech suit of armour with rocket boots and repulsors.

This one is still on probation, but things look good for it staying on the pull list.

And there are a couple that I’m planning on picking up when they’re released:

TheRay_1The Ray

Superheroes called The Ray have appeared in the past, but in the New 52 universe, Lucien Gates is the first person to be The Ray. This is going to be a 4-issue mini-series, with the first issue coming out tomorrow (December 14th). Apparently, Lucien Gates gets zapped by a mysterious beam of energy that gives him superpowers. And these superpowers are going to be handy when his city comes “under attack from giant, building-sized monsters.”

Unless this one turns out to be a dud, I’m going to pick up all four issues in the mini-series.

Dark Matter

Given that this was the “gateway” comic that lured me into the world of comic books in the first place, it’s a safe bet that I’m going to pick up all four issues in this series by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, two of the writers/producers of the Stargate franchise.

Quoting from one of his blog entries: A derelict ship floating in space. Its troubled crew awakened from stasis with no memories of who they are or how they got onboard. Their search for answers triggering the vessel’s deadly security system, awakening a relentless android bent on their destruction. Facing threats at every turn, they will have to work together to survive a dangerous voyage charged with vengeance, redemption, betrayals, and, ultimately, hidden secrets best left unknown.

I’m really looking forward to this one – the teasers I’ve seen on his website and in the Previews catalogue hint at good things to come. The first issue comes out in about four weeks time, just a couple of days before my birthday and I’m planning on picking up two copies of this series. Who knows… maybe I’ll be able to get them signed at some point down the time line. Smile
