GCP93C – Out in the cedars

June 12, 2005 @ 21:41 By: gordon Category: Geocaching

I checked my geocaching.com account and found that the cache Kathy and I placed yesterday has been approved by TPTB.

So, GCP93C is now available for your geocaching enjoyment! 🙂

A day at the beach

June 12, 2005 @ 11:47 By: gordon Category: General, Geocaching

I had a nice day, Saturday. I picked up Kathy shortly after lunch and we met up with my friend, Patti, for ice cream (“there’s always room for ice cream“) and then Kathy and I headed out to find somewhere to have a picnic. We ended up at the Baxter Conservation Area which is operated by the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority. There, had our picnic and watched the Ice Cream Float — a pontoon boat operated by an enterprising fellow who said to himself one day “Eureka! If I put some coolers on my boat, I can sell ice cream to the people at the beach!” — as it dispensed ice cream and other goodies to the people at the beach.

After a few hours at the beach, we headed off to find somewhere to hide a new geocache. We ended up choosing a location somewhere southwest of North Gower. As soon as it’s approved, I’ll write something here.

Three more found and one not

May 22, 2005 @ 11:34 By: gordon Category: Geocaching

Found three geocaches yesterday with Kathy and Darin. Tried to find a fourth cache, but because of where it was and the fact that we had drawn the attention of a security guard, we opted to scrub the attempt rather than be faced with having to explain why we were skulking around a federal government facility.

Preparing for GAG 6

April 04, 2005 @ 20:54 By: gordon Category: Geocaching

I hid my first cache in preparation for the GAG 6 event this weekend. (Technically, it is the second cache I have, but I didn’t hide the first one myself, so it’s really my first.)

Hopefully, it’ll attract a lot of cachers. The next nearest cache is a couple of kilometres away. There used to be one closer, but it disappeared about a year ago and the owner hasn’t replaced it.

First cache of the Spring!

March 26, 2005 @ 09:37 By: gordon Category: Geocaching

The weather yesterday afternoon was very nice, so I took advantage of it to do my first cache of the Spring. I loaded up my GPS and headed out to find GCN6NJ, one of a series of caches with a railroad theme.

As you’d expect, it’s near a railway line in the west end of the city where a derailment occured about twenty years ago. I found it quite easily and did the usual swapping of goodies in and out. It’s nice to be able to go caching without having to worry about frostbite.

Geocaching in the rain

November 04, 2004 @ 23:59 By: gordon Category: Geocaching

The week has been one of the worst I’ve had in the last few years for a variety of reasons, so I decided that some “fun” was required. I headed out to do some geocaching after dark, weather be damned.

So I called up Bev the Diver (someone I dive with) and convinced her to head out in the rain to find a new cache called The Radish-on Travel Bug Hotel located in the middle on the woods in near Bells Corners. In recognition of the need for extreme sunshine, I released a new travel bug called Donald the Sun Worshipper whose goal is “to visit as many warm sunny places as possible and get his picture taken relaxing on the beach”.

We homed in on the general cache location and found a side street with access to the forest paths to park on. Armed with flashlights, chemical light sticks and my GPS, we headed into the woods to find the cache. I guess we spent about an hour round-trip doing the cache including about 20 minutes of searching for the cache container once on-site.

I traded Donald for a Jeep travelbug and left a genuine Geocaching.com pencil.

Great weekend

October 05, 2004 @ 00:33 By: gordon Category: Diving, General, Geocaching

I had a great weekend!

Saturday, I headed off with a dive buddy to go diving in the St. Lawrence near Prescott. The conditions were less than ideal (2′ waves and whitecaps) so I dragged her off to do some geocaching. We did three caches and I also did cache maintenance on a cache that was tranferred to me. We agreed to try again on Sunday.

Saturday evening, I saw Collateral at AMC with Ken the Banker. Great movie! Quite a bit better than I expected. Definitely worth seeing if you haven’t seen it.

Sunday, I picked up my dive buddy and we met up with another diver at the Rothesay, a wreck in the St. Lawrence near Prescott. We suited up and headed out to the wreck. About halfway through the dive, I realized I was missing a weight pouch, so we retraced our steps and eventually found it snagged in a loop of rope. Grr!

But, even though we didn’t completely circle the wreck, the dive was still a success and very enjoyable.
